Everything about loading third-party scripts

The 100 PageSpeed points from the test environment vanish once the tags go live. How to deal with third-party tags smartly and keep a webshop fast.

The talk in one paragraph

You’ve just delivered a new Hyvä shop. On the test environment it had the magic 100 points in PageSpeed Insights. Now the tag manager is switched on, a handful of third-party scripts have been added, and you watch the score drop — and the site slow down with it. How do you handle third-party tags in a smart way, and make sure your webshop stays fast?

What it covers

  • Measure what matters — why the PageSpeed score is a starting point and the waterfall tells the real story.
  • Clean up first — the scripts you can simply remove, and the lighter alternatives for the ones you keep.
  • Stay out of the critical path — async, defer, preconnect and hosting scripts yourself.
  • Load on interaction — deferring the tag manager and heavy widgets until the visitor actually does something.
  • Look ahead — Partytown and server-side tagging, and their trade-offs.

This is the same subject as Late to the party, which I gave at the Hyvä Meetup. That page has the full slide deck and a longer write-up of every technique.
